Law Against Internet Phishing Signed

Monday 3 October 2005

Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill to make Internet "phishing" punishable by law.

"Phishing" is a form of identity theft whereby you receive an e-mail falsely representing a business in order to "fish" for and obtain personal information from you such as banking details and passwords.

Although it is normal to receive occasional e-mails from your bank, they should never ask for your security details by e-mail or ask you to click on a link to a page requiring you to enter these details.

As with most suspicious e-mails you are recommended to delete any "phishing" mails you receive. You should contact your bank if you are concerned about online security and also make sure your PC's security is up-to-date.
