Home PCs Under Attack Every Hour

Tuesday 10 October 2006

An experiment by the BBC has shown that an unprotected PC will suffer an attack by malicious programs every hour it is connected to the Internet.

The BBC set up a test with a PC that had no protection, in order to see how often it would come under attack by security threats such as viruses, worms and spyware.

The PC was switched on, connected to the Internet and then left alone. It then recorded at least one serious attack an hour, at times every 15 minutes.

Attacks included worms such as the Blaster worm, as well as programs attempting to steal information from the PC. Other attacks tried to hijack the PC or render it unusable.

The experiment highlights the dangers of using your PC online without full protection.
