Fake BMW Lottery Spam

Tuesday 31 October 2006

Phishing e-mails are circulating that claim the recipient has won 950,000 EUR and a brand new BMW car as part of a lottery.

Security experts Sophos warn that the spam e-mails include a fake address, e-mail and telephone number which the recipient is told to contact to claim their winnings.

The e-mail attempts to get people to hand over their personal information. Those who respond to these types of e-mails put their bank account details at risk and are often asked to pay a "handling fee" for the transfer of their non-existent winnings.

Users are advised not to respond to spam messages like these and to instead delete them.
