New Year Message Is Malicious Spam

Tuesday 2 January 2007

A new e-mail spam campaign that wishes the recipient a 'Happy New Year' actually contains a worm virus.

The messages come with an attached 'postcard' file with the extension '.zip' or '.exe'.

When the attached file is opened, the malicious worm code infects a user's PC and then sends itself to contacts in the user's address book.

Security experts at VeriSign's iDefense Labs identified the code as a variant of one of the most common Trojan viruses on the Internet.

Users are advised never to open attachments such as these that arrive with unsolicited e-mails.
