Hoax E-mail Claims eBay To Close

Friday 19 January 2007

A hoax e-mail claiming that eBay is closing down is actually an attempt to steal users' details.

The e-mail warns users that as of 27 February 2007 the popular auction site will shut down due to repeated "abuses on our company".

The e-mail then asks users to click a link to vote to keep the site alive. However, clicking the link takes the user to a phishing web site designed to steal their usernames and passwords.

Security experts Sophos discovered the scam messages and although most users will recognize a claim like this as an obvious hoax, 75% of all phishing emails last year were targeted at eBay and PayPal users.
