Google Search Becomes Universal

Thursday 17 May 2007

Google has made a significant change to its main search service so that it now shows a combination of different types of results, including news and video, not just web pages.

The change means searches on the main Google web site will no longer return just matching web pages, but also matching videos, news, maps, books, blogs and images.

Navigation tabs now appear at the top of the Google site to help users narrow down search results to certain categories, such as videos or books only.

Related search terms and news articles are displayed at the bottom of the results page.

Google's new "Universal Search" idea aims to make it easier for users to find different kinds of results without having to run the same search several times.

Google plans to continue working on improving the service in the future.
