According to the AVG website, the new version of AVG Free is scheduled for release sometime in November. At that point you will need to download the new version of AVG from the website, as version 6.0 will no longer be supported and won't be able to catch the latest viruses. You will most likely receive a message when the new version is available (possibly through an e-mail or during the update process described below).
The Beta versions mentioned on the website are for bug-testing purposes only so for now, continue using your current version 6.0.
To update the virus definition files inside AVG (which keep it up to date about the latest viruses), go to your Start menu > Programs > AVG 6.0 Anti-Virus System > AVG Control Center.
Click on the Update Manager tab, look for the section titled 'Download from server' and click the Update Now button. Once it has finished downloading, click OK and allow AVG to update itself.
You should try to perform this update at least once a week to keep AVG up to date so it can catch all those nasty viruses :)
