AVG7 Free

Hello the Group. After numerous tries, and finding

your page., I was able to download AVG7 Free.
Towards the end - messages appeared as follows:-

Publisher could not be verified and

Installation FAILED at 'Changing language to 67698688'

I am completely baffled - AVG7 was newly installed and
worked fine until Windows XP SP2 was installed (it is
like a foreign language !!) Can anyone help/advise,
please ?

Hi molly

Here's a few steps you can take which will give you a clean install of AVG, hopefully solving your problem. First of all, save any work you have open as your PC may need to be restarted during these steps:

1. In Control Panel go to Add or Remove Programs.
Click on any instances of AVG you see on the list and click Remove to begin removal. Leave the boxes about 'remove user settings' and 'virus vault' unticked and click Yes to remove. Click OK and your PC will be restarted to complete the removal process.

2. Download the AVG Free file again following this link http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/1/lng/us/tpl/v5 in case the file you got before was corrupted

3. Begin installation and choose 'Standard installation' when given the option. You should be able to ignore any messages that say 'publisher cannot be verified' and continue with installation anyway

4. If the 'Installation FAILED..' error message appears again, repeat step 1 above.
Now repeat Step 3 - but this time choose 'Custom installation' so that you will be able to choose to install to a different directory folder location.
So instead of the default "C:\ProgramFiles\Grisoft\AVG Free", try something like "C:\ProgramFiles\AVG Free" so that it now uses a completely new folder location, which should make it less likely that files from older versions of AVG will be able to cause problems with this new one.

Hello Paul and thank you for your time and welcome.

Your instructions look good, although I have been at
the end of you paragraph 2 over a dozen times and
got the failure message ! I liked the AVG programme
and have had no problems in 3 years, but as the
end of December got closer and I could not master
the anti-virus on SP2, I went hunting for another free
anti-virus programme. Found one called avast! 4 Home
which I successfully installed - it isvery quick and has
voice over whilst you work.....
If I now tried to re-install the AVG 7 Free, would I blow
a few bolts on the computer - or have you heard if
avast is reliable - it has a registration key and does
automatic updates.......I need to read up to keep out
of trouble !!
Again many thanks, and a Happy New Year to you
and yours.

BTW - I like the overall look of your page and contents.

I haven't used avast myself, but I found some user reviews of avast here:

http://www.download.com/3302-2239_4-10337351.html

From what I've read about avast it seems to be pretty good, so if you are happy with it then I would stick with that program.

It is not usually a good idea to have more than one anti-virus program as they will tend to clash with each other, so if you do decide to try AVG again I would recommend uninstalling avast first.

Also, make sure to get a firewall progam such as the free ZoneAlarm if you haven't got it already. This will work alongside your anti-virus program to keep your PC safe online.

Happy New Year
